Quick update

It’s been a busy couple weeks, and I have a lot to share in the next few days.  I haven’t been posting as frequently due to travel and work, but also because some things have been “cooking”, you might say.

November 1-4, I attended the Introductory and Advanced Workshops on CBSM, by Dr. Doug McKenzie-Mohr in Richmond, BC.  The four days covered the research behind and the practice of CBSM, as well as presenting it to community organizations.  See my first post here and keep your eye out for the second post recap in a couple of days!

Last week, I had a wonderful and encouraging conversation with Val about my CDR Assessment.  It’s like looking into a mirror that reveals your motivations, aspirations, and what we might call “positive-negatives” (where we might be bringing too much of a good thing or holding back when we shouldn’t).  A generous gift from the Bush Foundation, I found the assessment so helpful and especially now towards the beginning of my fellowship.

I’ve also been meeting my goals for meditation and reflection practice this month.  It’s required putting time on my calendar and having support for taking that time.  It’s been important to build this into what I’ve come to identify as “fellowship work”.  I still feel some uncertainty about my fellowship, anxiety about my goals and my ability to achieve them, and frustration with the time management challenges I’ve faced this last month.  I hope some of this will subside as my reflective and meditative practice becomes more established and as I transition from preparatory research and learning to the doing (presenting, consulting, writing, etc.).

Engagement, in new light: MCN’s Annual Conference

This afternoon I attended the first set of workshops at the MN Council for Non-Profit’s Annual Conference.  This event was recommended to me by several peers for its focus on leadership and the opportunity to network with others working on community issues.  My afternoon of workshops was really about ENGAGEMENT, the value of it, how to increase it, and how to mobilized engaged individuals for further action. “Coming into Community”: Bush Fellows Leadership Development Seminars Pt. 1 (of 8)

Last week, I attend the first of eventually eight Bush Fellow Leadership Development Seminars.  The two-day seminar was an enriching experience.  It was a time to meet and get to know other the other 17 Bush Fellows, to explore my leadership style and learn about others’, and to begin understanding “the work of leadership.”

Below, I describe my reflections and learning points around 5 different pieces of the seminar:

  1. What’s in a Wordle?
  2. Fair Process Exercise
  3. Assumptive Worlds
  4. Adaptive Leadership
  5. Reflective Practices
